General anesthesia
General anesthesia puts the body into a sleep-like state in which consciousness and the sensation of pain are completely eliminated. This state is induced by a specifically dosed sleeping pill, which is administered via a venous cannula. For certain operations, such as operations on the abdominal organs, additional medication is used to relax the muscles. As ventilation is required for every anesthetic, we will discuss which type of ventilation is necessary for your operation during a detailed consultation before the procedure.
Advantages:
- You are completely unconscious during the procedure.
- No perception of pain, sounds or other stimuli.
- Also enables long and complex operations.
Disadvantages:
- Longer recovery time and stronger side effects such as nausea and fatigue.
- Increased risk of complications such as circulatory problems or respiratory depression.
Regional anesthesia
Regional anesthesia is used to eliminate the sensation of pain in specific areas of the body. For this purpose, local anesthetics are administered precisely, temporarily inhibiting the function of certain nerve structures. This can be done either by a single injection or by placing a very fine catheter, which enables effective pain therapy to be carried out for several days after the operation.
Advantages:
- Less strain on the body
- No artificial respiration required
- Faster recovery and fewer side effects
Disadvantages:
- Not suitable for complex or painful procedures
- Risk of nerve damage or local side effects such as bruising
- Can be problematic due to incomplete anesthesia or breakthrough pain during the procedure
Analgosedation
Analgosedation puts you in a state similar to twilight sleep and is therefore often referred to as twilight sleep. It reduces anxiety, pain and consciousness, allowing minor procedures to be carried out without stress. This method is considered to be particularly gentle and safe.
Advantages::
- Faster recovery
- Less stressful for the body
- Preservation of the natural breathing function
Disadvantages:
- Not suitable for complex or painful procedures
- Potential risk of side effects such as respiratory depression or nausea, depending on the medication and dosage
